Photograph Becomes Liturgical Art

First Church in Cambridge, UCC
11 Garden Street, Cambridge MA

"Waiting", a photograph by Cambridge photographer Gaylen Morgan, is installed temporarily during the Lenten season at First Church in Cambridge as an element of worship and as an offering. The image, 52 inches tall by 48 inches wide, is installed at the focal point of the chancel and hangs directly below a set of 19th and 20th century stained glass windows. The image is of a window, the cross pieces of the mullions echoing the church's cross which hangs over the altar table. The view beyond the mullions carries the eye out over the sea in the early morning light right before the sun breaks over the horizon. "I wanted to create an opening in the wall onto a scene that is contemplative, solemn and expectant" says Gaylen Morgan.
